Something you might not have done ten years ago. Two guys without shirts on were hanging out around the corner. Their eyes caught the moonlight spraying a white glow against the sandstone wall. One was one the phone. “No baby,” he pleaded, “I love just one girl. Just you, baby just you.” His friend stood up on the park bench and yelled “no he don’t, this man is single!” I kept walking. No point in sharing this perfect air with that scene. I cut through the back streets and over the oval. Trudging on grass as pulses of curdled guitars bounced around the open air. The place was full. Boulet at nine twenty, Tame Impala at ten thirty. A fresh shyness was on stage. You’d look at them they’d look away, playing their music to escape. Hands made sounds through leads and steel mesh that boxed your ears minutes in. Some guys down the front yelled out “the Eels won”, they pretended to care so it wasn’t so obvious they were on stage. I ran into my friends. Sam told us he needed to get laid just as his ex walked up behind him and ruined everything. I went outside for some fresh air, they rest went outside to smoke. Soon the stage was filled again by bodies topped with mop like hair. The crowd dumped itself inside the pit aching to get closer to the sound. It was nice having that kind of music drip into your ear. Some sonic gooey nectar that just knew where to go. An hour left without saying goodbye as everyone stood looking at the stage, waiting for an encore. Management waited a full ten minutes before turning on the lights. Soon the place was empty as grumpy young men collected plastic cups strewn around the venue. It was time, I thought, to wander somewhere else. It remains white and untouched while my right is freckled and worn. Sometimes I just stare at my unmade bed as I wonder why I never dream. Heat rises from the mattress making my fingers twitch. I only make it so I wont want to get back in. If I dressed for myself I would wear nothing. People value first impressions. Who knows what conversations I’ve missed. Clouds are always docile in a blue sky. It’s comforting to know things wont change. The sun doesn’t know me well enough to hang around. Restful day, fitful night. Who can trust a man who looks unhappy with the food he makes. Listlessly slapping it on a pan before he keeps it lukewarm for half a day. I eat it all the same. She wears beautiful things to hide her neck. It’s an unhappy causeway to the rest of her body. At least you have your mental health. She’s happy because she’s beautiful. But she’d hate me if she knew I was looking. When I first saw it I thought it was the moon. It’s a lot less perfect now but it’s the only picture of the moon I have. I imagine diving into the harbour and swimming down as far as I can. Deeper and deeper into darkness. The pressure pushing hard against my skin and my lungs crumbling like paper bags. But I’d ignore them and keep going. Ever swimming trying to reach the receding ocean floor. Always swimming down surrounded by a thick nothing. Bliss would come naturally. Instead I keep watching people watch something else. This man wished he was the smoke drifting from his lips. Soon the smoke obscures our vision. I can see why he likes it. No one can see you when you can’t see them. The clock tower asked me my name. I said I’d never tell. The sign and the stairs are lovers that will never touch. He bathes her in red light so she can feel alive. Otherwise who knows, she may look elsewhere. You always expect it to cool down once the sun sets but the temperature just stays the same. I decided to walk, a little dressed up and in a hurry. Walking fast. Walking like I was rubbing out cigarettes with each step. It was at The Enmore Theatre, a nice old venue with a bar called The Cafe on the side and all the trappings of Australia's wannabe art deco phase. People were milling around the entrance not sure if they should head inside yet. No one ever seems to pay attention to the support act any more. They show up late, watch the show then run back outside. Who knows where. I picked up my tickets and had to wrangle a media pass. “Three songs and get straight out of there... like run. He’s been known to walk off stage in the middle of a gig.” It felt close up in that pit, close enough to touch. There he was, Cale, straightened purple hair and shimmering vest glaring at his keyboard like a drunk man offended. Those first three songs felt like something sweet. They became one block of discordant blues as jagged as Cale’s expression and as soft and well trained as his tapping fingers. Placed deep towards the back of the stage his band played on in a practiced reverie, responding to the history of the man before them. I moved through the crowd trying to find some cool air, it was a mixture of generations, old people with young smiles and every variation in-between, the speaker rumbled “they say fear is a man’s best friend” and I stared longingly at the viola mounted on stage waiting for Venus In Furs. There was no encore. Instead the lights came on early to sighs from the audience. Later over beers in The Cafe I found out that Cale’s voice wasn’t fit to continue so he never picked up that viola.
